Give me the mushrooms Mum!

One of the things Shaan likes to do when I'm preparing dinner is have a taste of the different veggies that are cut up. Since we were having a tofu stir fry this night there were a lot of veggies to cook. This time I noticed him grabbing a mushroom and having a go at cutting it up. Though definitely not a veggie he likes to eat yet. Inwardly I am thinking what a great Mum I am being relaxed enough to let my son have a go at cutting food with a real knife. Then he decides to grab another mushroom and another mushroom and I'm no longer relaxed Mum. Shaan stop that! You are using up all the mushrooms that are meant for dinner.

Making Your Own Cleaning Products- Glass Cleaner

Ok one of my goals this year has been to make my own cleaning products instead of buying commercially made products. One reason is that I think it makes sense to cut down on the number of chemicals that are used around the home as well as being better for the budget. However the reality of my life since having No 3 is that wanting to do these things is easier than actually doing them. So my first attempt at this has been to make my own glass cleaner. Very easy! The recipe I used I found over on the Green Goddess website. Sign up for her newsletter for lots of great ideas for around the home. You just simply add 1 part vinegar to 3 parts water. I filled up my existing window cleaner spray bottle with it. You can add a few drops of essential oil to mask the smell of the vinegar if you want and rub on with newspaper. All clean! The tricky part is trying to get my kids to stop using the mirrors to make faces on or do push ups against like Dad does and so leave marks on them.

Love to hear your ideas about this topic and what you do to use more natural products around the home.

A Picnic at Home

After a really stressful week it was lovely to do something a bit different as a family. We were going to go to a park and have a picnic. But as we are now carless (Our car was damaged in a car accident this past week. Thankfully no one was hurt!) it got too complicated with what park and how we were going to get there. Instead we decided to enjoy the lovely, warm autumn sun in our own backyard.

Our backyard gets the least attention of any part of our home. Neither of us are avid gardeners. So its great that our mandarin tree has actually produced some fruit. Even more amazing is that the kids haven't picked it prematurely.

Family time!

Shaan jumping on something he isn't meant to. He is really starting to assert his independence lately with wanting to do things himself or get into things he's not meant to. Almost two and it is such a cute but trying age.

Cloth Nappy Update

After starting out with two in cloth nappies (see this post) I'm now down to one. Main reason being that Shaan has grown out of his. One size fits all doesn't always fit all. Especially after 18 to 20 months. But he also had been wetting through his cloth nappies during the night even though we were putting extra layers in. I was finding it hard getting up to him as well to change his nappy and clothes in the middle of the night. So yep we have started with disposables intermittent with a dozen cloth nappies he still fits into. Not my first preference but less stressful for me at the moment.

Fun at the park with Dad

After a week of being only able to do the basics around the house because of my back our house was looking very messy. Hit kindly took all 3 kids down to the park so I could clean up albeit slowly. Thankfully my back is improving and I can get back to doing more washing, dishes, cooking, changing nappies etc. Though some things like vacuuming will just have to wait. Arrh- my life is feeling a bit repetitive and mundane at the moment.

Quick & Easy Dinner Recipe

We are having my version of this recipe for dinner tonight. I am facing another health challenge at the moment. Even though I am currently seeing a physio for my back I re-injured it on the weekend. Mother's Day actually. So I can only be on my feet for short periods of time before I need to lie down. It has been tricky trying to explain that to the kids. By the end of the day I'm bent over like my Grandma use to be. Well so my husband says!

So I have needed to find very quick and easy meals to cook that don't require a lot of time on my feet. This one looked suitable.

Penne with Beans
I used about a cup of kidney beans I had pre-cooked, 3 tomatoes I diced, diced onion, crushed fresh garlic, handful of thyme from the garden, salt and freshly ground black pepper.

Fry onion and garlic. Add tomatoes and beans. It took about 10 minutes to cook down. Cook penne. Mix with sauce. Top with grated cheese.

Too easy! Only hope the family likes it. They are not always that fond of beans.

Update: Typically the kids picked out all the beans and tomato and just ate the pasta. No seconds for them! Amazingly hubby gave it his approval and said he would eat it again. Must have been all the cheese that I mixed through.

Random Photos (of the kids)

Its been one of those weeks! Home with sick kids, up at night to all three. Feeling very tired... So I thought I would share some photos taken in the last few weeks.

Finally a photo of all FIVE of us!

Fun at the park.

Love seeing one of the many uses they come up with for cardboard boxes in their outside play.

This boy loves being able to see what's happening around him.

Important play- studying the hands!
